They only destroy the game if you let them. If you have a chuckle and keep playing, there shouldn't be a problem. If you just keep going around looking for them, that's when it starts to ruin the experience. For some people. I find them funny no matter what (More Cowbell!).

Indeed, the Blue Oyster Cult/SNL reference was one of the finest. Drakes on a Plain was good, but "More Cowbell" takes the cake for my favorite parody quest. <|

I don't even notice most of the references, being totally out of touch with pop culture. The ones I did notice were a nice bonus, but none of them ever prompted me to actually laugh out loud, so I honestly wouldn't care if they were there or not -_- I do think it would be nice to have more lore-based references, but I accept that this obviously isn't the line ANet are going for; it's a shame really, because there is a lot of potential. The latest additions to the KoaBD title royally stink however, and sound rubbish in the game context, and have actually put me off trying to obtain them. Skillz is the only other thing I really think is out of place.

The references are good, shows that Anet don't take themselves TOO seriously, that they can have some fun

I used to like the real life references, but I think Anet really went overboard with them. Having a few real life references is fun, but having, for example every single inscription name be such a reference is way too much, I think.

@Miral

Seriously, no offense, but take a break fromt he game until GW:EN comes out, you sound like your starting to hate the game through boredom, I've been there and I'm there at the moment aswell, but its easily fixed, just play something else for a month or so, you'll appreciate GW so much more after you have

I do think there are a bit to many references in them, but dont forget the other jokes they put in like when you have to examine bushes for the centaurs. ("Its a bush, a bushy bush.Where you expecting sompthing else?")

The jokes are real fun, but i do think they need to focus on the lore aspect now, we have enough jokes now.

Pop-culture references = teh win.
Too many pop-culture references = no originality = teh suck.

But it is totally an internet thing. Pop-culture references form the backbone of web humour... as do our bizarre little memes..... hence the All Your Base references in the game.

That said.... Superdarth's avatar reminded me that at least Guild Wars hasn't done as Everquest 2 did.... i.e. the Owls.

I think what Guild Wars really need is more....

Dio Brando FTW!

Maybe I'm getting a bit bored, and therefore getting annoyed a bit too fast. After completing all 3 campaigns, there's nothing left to do except maxing your titles, and farming for purely PvE-players. I made some other characters, but after going through a campaign for the 4th time, it's getting a bit repetitive.

On the other hand, I'm still enjoying vanquishing area's with friends/guildmates, so I'm not totally bored. I'm just hoping Arenanet will focus a bit more on the lore of Guild Wars for their expansion/GW2. Some references to our world are indeed well-placed, I just hope Arenanet won't overdo it.

SotiCoto!! Where did you get JoJo's Bizarre Adventure comic from? I had issue 1-3 from ages ago, but when I moved back to england I can't get them anywhere. Not even at Forbidden Planet.

Sorry to be wayyyy off topic!!

Cool

More Cowbell vs. The Knights Who Say Nian...I can't decide which is funnier.

I love Christopher Walken, he's hilarious (albeit a bit creepy) and I've seen Blue Oyster Cult in concert 4 times since I was a kid, so that SNL skit really cracks me up.

But still, Monty Python rocks my socks...plus, I swear my three month old son started saying NI a couple days ago, so I've had this great urge to watch Holy Grail again.

Oh please don't make me decide which one I like more, just keep 'em coming!

Oh and Jayne Forestlight being named after Jayne Cobb from Firefly, too awesome!!! (if you don't know, she drops the hammer Vera, which was Cobb's gun on the show, & her elite air of enchantment used to be Serenity which is a ship from the show...I wish they'd never changed it, personally)

I like that it doesn't take itself TOO seriously, yet has enough lore to work off of to have good stories & characters.
I like the lore because they don't get so full of themselves that they think they need to point out every little freakin thing. Too much lore can actually hurt a story. Case in point:The crappy Star Wars prequels.

I love the pop culture references. I hope Anet continues this tradition. My top favorites:

-Vera
-Ogre-Slaying Knife
-"This is Hard Mode!"
-the Zhed dialogue in Pogahn Passage

=D What a great game.

I used to enjoy them, but for me they jumped the shark with the (alleged) top 2 KoaBD ranks.

(I would thoroughly enjoy a WRYYYYYYY shout or emote though!)
